The Erasmus+ training course “Our Stories” has officially begun in Druskininkai, where youth workers from six European countries have gathered for an eight-day exploration of storytelling as a meaningful tool in youth work. Hosted by us, Average Youth Association, the programme brings together 24 participants representing Lithuania, Romania, Greece, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.
Storytelling is at the core of this training, offering youth workers an opportunity to examine how narratives shape identity, understanding, and community. Throughout the course, participants explore why stories resonate, how they support young people’s personal development, and how they can be used to create safer, more engaging educational spaces. The sessions combine theory with practice, encouraging participants to experiment with different story structures, archetypes, and methods of expression while reflecting on the impact stories have on perception and emotions.
As the training unfolds, participants move through a progressive learning journey that begins with building trust and creating a shared learning environment. They then explore the foundations of storytelling: how stories are structured, what drives a compelling narrative, and how personal experiences can be transformed into meaningful, shareable stories. The training continues by examining the role of stories within society and how collective narratives influence communities, values, and social dynamics. Later in the week, the focus turns to practical applications in youth work, where participants learn to use storytelling to address sensitive topics, facilitate discussions, manage conflict, and design activities grounded in narrative approaches. The process culminates with hands-on practice, allowing participants to design and present their own stories, workshops, or youth work scenarios. Daily reflection moments and cultural evenings deepen the learning experience and foster a strong sense of connection within the group.
As “Our Stories” continues, participants will dive deeper into understanding how narratives can educate, inspire, and empower young people. By the end of the course, they will leave with practical tools, new methods, and renewed confidence in integrating storytelling into their work with youth.
